In a time when our bodies come in contact with not only the natural world but also a range of synthetic materials, skin becomes the focus of my artwork. Through a variety of media, the subject of my work reflects on my knowledge of the various roles the human body 's epidermis plays in relation to its physical functions, environment, and design. By living life and observing closely the complexity of skin, I recognize it as several small elements working to become a whole; a form that not only is bound to serving purposes such as a flexible container, protector, and regulator of its internal organs and bones, but also as beautiful surface qualities and it's ability to reflect in other daily life objects, animate or inanimate. I define the purpose of skin and its aesthetic by pushing vivid black and white imagery with hints of text to translate the importance and complexity of this internal/external membrane.
Through a series of representations of my explorations, I expand the horizons of skin and its various forms by placing it in abstract situations using extreme changes in scale to represent the intricacy of the epidermis through first and third person point of views. Alongside of the subjective attributes of this series, artistically an interesting interaction erupts within each piece, as skin challenges its natural environment to create a composition of emotional conflicts. By using very high black and white contrasts as well as various magnified studies of the surface, I reveal the conflicting contradictions that lie within skin.
Numerous challenges arise as I continue my study of the human body. My investigations sought through personal interpretation and observations in order to attempt to learn more about a person's story through their skin. It is a test of comfort as well as close observation that attributes to the factor of understanding not just the surface but what lies underneath. The main drive behind my work is to develop and communicate the idea of skin being not just one entity, but many, by looking closer and seeing the deeper portrait.
